Fed: Australians strongly support detention system - Newspoll

The latest Newspoll shows the majority of Australians believe the mandatory detentionsystem for asylum seekers should continue.

More than half of those surveyed said all asylum seekers should be held in detentioncentres -- and only 15 per cent said no asylum seekers should be held.

The Australian newspaper reports only 19 per cent of those surveyed believed womenand children should be released from detention centres -- equating to 75 per cent of peoplesupporting some form of detention.

Ten per cent of people surveyed remain uncommitted.

Sixty per cent of those in the 35 to 49 year age group supported holding all asylumseekers in detention centres.

Those over 50 were the most supportive of releasing women and children from the centresat 23 per cent.
