SA: No war on Syria says Downer
Foreign Minister ALEXANDER DOWNER says the United States is not about to go to war with Syria.
But he says diplomatic pressure will be placed on Damascus because of its decisionto leave open its border with Iraq and to allow Iraqi figures to escape.
Mr DOWNER's told ABC radio that both those factors have annoyed the Americans substantially.
But he says he wouldn't extrapolate from that that the Americans are about to launcha military attack on Syria.
He says there's no prospect of that happening.
The United States suspects that Syria is developing chemical weapons and has accusedit of possibly harbouring fugitive Iraqi officials.
Secretary of State COLIN POWELL has said in Washington that the US administration willexamine possible measures of a diplomatic, economic or other nature against Syria.
