CHEYENNE

Urban forestry crew to conduct right of way tree work today

The Cheyenne urban forestry division will do right of way treework at 400 E. 17th St., the northeast corner of Evans Avenue andEast 17th Street, today, weather permitting.

Work will begin at 8:30 a.m. and should be finished before 3 p.m.Motorists should expect intermittent traffic stoppage along EvansAvenue, southbound and northbound, during the morning, according toa news release from the city. East 17th Street between Evans Avenueand Van Lennen Avenue will be closed to through traffic from latemorning to mid-afternoon. All aerial tree work should be done by 3p.m.

Stump grinding will be finished on Thursday, weather permitting.Traffic lane restrictions will not be needed Thursday for EvansAvenue or for East 17th Street.

Fatalities on Wyoming roads rose by 14 percent last year, statesays

Traffic fatalities on Wyoming roads rose by 14 percent in 2010,largely as a result of more fatal motorcycle and impaired-drivingcrashes, according to the Wyoming Department of Transportation.

Deaths in alcohol- and drug-related crashes increased by a thirdto 68, and accounted for 44 percent of all traffic fatalities in thestate during the year.

Alcohol was a factor in more than a third of the fatal motorcyclecrashes in 2010, and the average blood-alcohol concentration of theriders involved was 0.18, more than double the legal limit.Motorcycle fatalities accounted for 20 percent of all the trafficdeaths during the year, while motorcycles made up only 5 percent ofthe motor vehicles registered in Wyoming.

One bright spot in 2010 was a drop in the number of young driversand passengers killed, from 30 in 2009 to 14 last year.

Of the 153 people killed on Wyoming roads during the year, 107were Wyoming residents, up 20 percent from the previous year. Out-of-state fatalities rose by one to 46.

Single-vehicle rollover crashes took 62 lives during the year.

Half of those killed on Wyoming highways last year were notbuckled up, compared to about 70 percent in recent years.

Cheyenne police to hold seminar on social networking crimes

The Cheyenne Police Department will present a seminarspecifically addressing the potential for criminal activity whenusing Facebook and other social networking media.

This presentation will include the potential dangers of differentwebsites and information posted on them by millions of users. Mostimportantly, it will cover the ease in which anyone can gainunlimited access to personal and family information.

Attendees will be provided with security tips for maximizingprivacy while using the Internet. Importantly, for parents, you willlearn some tips for how to discover what your teenager is doing onthe Internet and the tricks they are using to fool you.

"Facebook & Social Networking Safety" will be presented at theCheyenne-Kiwanis Community House in Lions Park from 6-8 p.m. Feb.24. It is free to the public.

Council to hold work session on police department-issued vehicles

The Cheyenne City Council will hold a work session from noon to 1p.m. Feb. 16 at 2101 O'Neil Ave.

The meeting will take place in the Council Office, Room 115.

The purpose of the work session is to discuss the current use ofCheyenne Police Department-issued vehicles.
