Teen, man charged in drive-by shooting
A 14-year-old teen and his 23-year-old accomplice were arrested over the weekend and charged in the March 5 shooting death of a man who was standing outside an apartment building in the 3700 block of South Rhodes.
Police allege the unidentified teen along with Leanord C. Suggs, of the 2400 block of West 57th Street, were riding in a 1998 Buick Century when they encountered 27-year-old Charles Smith standing outside a CHA building waiting for his wife to come out. The two reportedly called Smith by his nickname (Chill) and then opened fire on him before fleeing southbound on Rhodes in the vehicle.
Smith died shortly after the shooting from multiple gunshot wounds to the chest and abdomen. Suggs and his accomplice were charged with first degree murder and were scheduled to appear in Bond Court late Monday.
Suggs was arrested last Thursday and identified in a lineup. Charges against-him were not approved until late Saturday.
In an unrelated drive-by shooting that occurred on Feb. 2 in which a 21-year-old man was shot to death, police arrested a 23-year-old South Side man.
Charged with first degree murder is James Henderson of the 6500 block of South Emerald. It is alleged he was the lone occupant in a 2000 blue Monte Carlo that opened fire on 21-year-old Stacey Erving as he stood on the street in the 7800 block of South Sangamon.
Erving, of the 100 block of East 155th Street in Dolton, died of his wounds later that day. Henderson was scheduled to appear in Bond Court Monday. Word of his bond was not available at Defender press time.
Police in Area 4 Violent Crimes arrested a West Side man and charged him with the Dec. 1 shooting of 18-year-old Maurice Phillips.
Police allege 21-year-old Larry Redmond of the 700 block of North Lorel, had been involved in an ongoing feud with Phillips before shooting him in the back as he stood in the 4400 block of West Harrison Street. Redmond faces first degree murder charges and appeared in Bond Court late Monday.
