Qld: Brisbane City Council out to block airport shopping centre

The Brisbane City Council has launched legal action in a bid to block a huge new shoppingcentre near Brisbane Airport.

Brisbane Lord Mayor TIM QUINN says Westfield's Gateway Park Development will placeundue stress on the city's roads and infrastructure system.

Mr QUINN says the plan includes retail floor space of 70,000 square metres, which isin breach of the council's planning scheme and the Regional Framework for Growth Managementfor South-East Queensland.

He says the proposal for the development, which consists of a supermarket, specialityshops, factory outlets and bulk retailers, will attract more traffic onto the GatewayMotorway and the road system which connects into the airport.

The council is concerned the development will also divert shoppers away from the northsidecentres of Toombul, Carindale and Chermside.

The council has filed its application against the development in the Federal Court.
